Kasey Scott-Brown was nominated to our Carmen Durazo Cultural Arts Center Distinguised Artist Wall on January 14, 2020.
Since high school, (class of ’77) Kasey has had a camera close by and her thoughts and hands are always busy creating something.
Kasey often wishes that she could remember who handed her that first camera, an Olympus OM1. If she could, she would thank them for opening her heart, mind and imagination to a lifetime of creating art. Not only photography, but mixed media canvas pieces, a sketch here and there, pet urns, digital manipulation of a photo and rock art. If that person, from high school, would come forward she would love to share with them what it is they started with that simple gift.
Born and raised on Preston Drive in Calexico, the youngest of three. Kasey was anywhere but home. Hanging out at one friends or another, knowing full well that she could just “walk in” and stay, often eat and be reprimanded if needed, as long as she was in HER front yard, “when the street lights came on”.
In high school when that infamous camera appeared, Kasey was lucky enough that her dad turned the ‘boys” room into her own private darkroom.. Spending hours and hours running back and forth from the darkroom to the bathroom to see what was developing.
Kasey has photographed professional tennis, celebrities, the beauty of foreign country and it’s people, beloved pets, weddings, and even funerals. It’s her way to preserve a moment in time that the mind often forgets. A photograph or piece of art can evoke emotions and memories from events long gone.
The current focus of Kaseys work is photography and digital computer manipulation. Subjects range from city and desert landscapes, pets, cocktails and sometimes people. Her work has been featured in Inland Empire Magazine, Pet Companion Magazine, pet stores, and local galleries, the San Diego Museum of Photographic Arts on a fine bottle of Temecula port wine, called GUAPO and ARCHIE. Most recently Kaseys show “Cuba on Canvas” was on exhibit at the Carmen Durazo Cultural Arts Center with a portion of sales proceeds going to Calexico Arts Council.
It all started with the gift of a camera.
Kasey currently resides in Palm Springs with her wife Read.
