Community Mural Project Program
Bringing Art to Our Community
The City of Calexico Community Mural Project Program was created to celebrate creativity, beautify public spaces, and enrich the visual experience of residents and visitors throughout our community.
Through this program, local and regional artists are invited to transform public and approved private spaces into vibrant works of art that reflect Calexico’s culture, identity, history, and community spirit. Murals help create welcoming environments, inspire civic pride, and contribute to the activation of public spaces through artistic expression.
In addition to beautification, the program serves as a proactive strategy to discourage graffiti and vandalism by activating blank walls with meaningful public art.
Program Mission
To promote the creative expression of artists while enhancing the City of Calexico through engaging public art that inspires community pride, cultural appreciation, and visual enrichment.
About the Program
The Community Mural Project is administered by the City of Calexico Recreation Department and may include mural opportunities on City-owned facilities, public spaces, and approved privately owned locations throughout the city.
Murals commissioned through this program are considered temporary public art installations, intended to enrich the community for a designated period while allowing the City flexibility to refresh public spaces through future artistic opportunities.
Each mural cycle may feature different themes, locations, project opportunities, and artist selection criteria.
Artist Opportunities
Artists selected through the program may receive:
Artist stipends
Installation cost reimbursement (subject to program guidelines)
Opportunities to showcase their artistic talent in highly visible public spaces
Recognition as part of the City’s growing public art program
Artists are selected through a competitive application process based on creativity, originality, artistic quality, project feasibility, and alignment with each cycle’s themes and goals.
